I think "civilization" is a very thin veil. When that veil is lifted, whether in a celebration or a riot, people's true nature is revealed. Sane people act as before, with respect and compassion for others. People whose anger is only held in check by the "rules" go wild, destroying things and hurting people.
Don't you think?

The other bit of civilization stripped away in this film -- decency towards those who are different from you. I can't be the only person to notice that the looters seemed to be all white, and many of the looted businesses were Chinese owned.

This film gets more depressing the more I think about it. "Greatest Generation" my foot!

For stupid war time rioting ,the following incident must rank highly. It has been called"the battle of brisbane"
and occurred on the night of 26th November 1942. The riot lasted 3 hours and it was Australian soldiers fighting American soldiers. One soldier was shot dead and there were many injuries.

THe veil of civilisation has certainly been lifted in my home city of Adelaide. In recent days, the crimes against children scandal has engulfed the city with mass arrests ,resignation of the leading church official and at least one suicide. While in the adjacent city of Melbourne, the talk is mainly of the gangland murders and police corruption which are making Al Capone,s 1920,s Chicago look like child,s play.
